As a teacher of the fourth grade of the fourthgrade of SD Negeri Bandungrejo 02 Bantur, the researcher found some problems concerning the students’ English vocabulary mastery. There are 1) students’ vocabulary mastery is low, students in class still have difficulties in mastering basic English vocabulary, 2) many students tend to keep themselves in the silent went the teacher asks them to say basic English vocabularies which has given by the teacher in the previous meeting, 3) students are reluctant and discouraged to speak in target language, 4) the teacher is not graduated of English language. So the teacher difficulty of technique in explanation materials and the students are getting bored easily because the teacher only used the textbook.
The reseacher focus on the teaching English for young learners by using flash cards. It is to improve the students vocabulary mastery. Specially for the students of fourth grades at SD Negeri Bandungrejo 02 – Bantur as the subject of this study, which contains 18 students. Consider those facts, the researcher is greatly use flash card to improve the students vocabulary mastery of the fouth-grade of SD Negeri Bandungrejo 02 – Bantur.
The study was conducted in starting from planning of the action, implementation of the action, observation, and reflecting. This technique was implemented in classroom action research. The instruments used to collect the data were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were obtained from field note. While the quantitative data were obtained from a test.
The findings were obtained from the field note and test during the action. The goals of the research were to find the real fact that happened. The planing action of cycle 1 supposed with some steps as follows: 1) preparing interesting flash cards in teaching learning process that have relationship with the theme. Those were fruits, animals, things in the class, profession and transportation, 2) showing the flash cards to the students and asking them to memorize the letters of the words written, 3) asking the students to tell about pictures of flash cards orally and 4) giving the students homework.The criteria of success of this study is 65 based on the school standart. The criteria of success was successfully if the mean score of the student’s vocabulary test was grether than and equal to 65. From the computation of students’s post test score, the mean of the student’s post test score was 78,89. It was mean that the students vocabulary mastery was increase after they were taught by using flash cards. So, the criteria of success was successfully reached.
Based on the background which is explained above, the researcher is interested in applying flash cards as a media to teach English of fourth grade students at SD Negeri Bandungrejo 02 – Bantur, because the researcher found some problems concerning the students’ English vocabulary. The researcher believed that using flash cards make the students easily to learn, practice the language clearly and have wide vocabulary. Based on the analysis on the students’ vocabulary mastery. Based on the finding of the study, the researcher recommend for the teacher to use flash cards as teaching media. It was done to made the student’s more interested in the lesson and they can get the lesson well. And the last, more better if the flash cards are clear, colorful flexible and can be taught to all of the students.
