This study is intended to find out teacher’s strategies to make students’ interest in learning English at SMAN 1 Galis-Pamekasan. The researcher takes Grade X, which consists of six classes, and the researcher chooses D class, which contains 35 students.
This study is descriptive qualitative and quantitative research because (1) the researcher works in a natural setting, (2) it describes the facts of the subjects, (3) the researcher is as the key of instrument in collecting the data. In this study, the instruments used interview, observation and questionnaire sheets. And the objectives of this study are to describe (1) the teacher’s strategies to make students’ interest in learning English at SMAN 1 Galis-Pamekasan, (2) the implementation of teacher’s strategies in teaching process, (3) the students’ response toward teacher’s strategies in teaching English, (4) the students’ interests in English at SMAN 1 Galis-Pamekasan.
From the findings, it can be concluded that the students have different interests in learning English. Some students have high interest in English and others have low interest in English. To overcome that problem, the teacher applied some teaching strategies to increase students’ interest in learning English e.i. motivation, using appropriate method, class management and using media. And the implementations of teacher’s strategies in teaching process were: (1) the teacher gave motivation and stimulance, (2) the teacher repeated the previous study, (3) the teacher explained the subject, and after that he asked the students to read the text book and asked them some difficult words, (4) the teacher asked questions and (5) the teacher gave tasks to the students.
Based on the research findings, some suggestions are formulated in order to make students’ interest in learning English. For the students, they should follow and obey the teacher’s instructions well so that they can improve their English ability. They should be aware that the teacher uses these strategies not only to make students’ interest but also to increase the students’ ability in English. It is also hoped that the students are more active and confidence in learning English so that they can increase their English ability. In addition, they must support each other in order to create a conducive learning atmosphere in the classroom which can stimulate motivation in increasing their English skills. For the English teacher, he should be more creative in his strategies and help the students to increase their interest and skills in English so that the English achievement could be obtained by employing the teaching strategies well. The teacher should use appropriate method in teaching English. The teacher should also create a joyful classroom atmosphere so that the students can be more interest and spirit in learning English.
Based on the findings, the researcher can conclude that the teacher’s strategies are good enough because his strategies can make the students active in the classroom and create a conducive teaching and learning atmosphere. But the teacher must be more active in the teaching process and give more care to the students.
