NATIONAL SEMINAR FOR UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATORS (NASA 2013)

The National Seminar for University Administrators (NASA 2013) was held on Wednesday, 8 May 2013 and Thursday, 9 May 2013 in Sunway Putra Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. The two-day event was organised by the Professional and Management Association (PMA) of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). The theme of the NASA 2013 was ‘Higher Education Blue Print for Malaysia: Role of Higher Education Institutions in the 21st Century’. There were nine paper presentations and one forum in the NASA 2013. About 120 participants attended the national seminar.
The opening ceremony commenced with the welcoming remarks by Br. Tuan Anuzi Bin Nik Him, the President of PMA 2013/2014. This continued with a speech by Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha Kamaruddin, Rector of the IIUM and a keynote address delivered by Cik Norina Jamaludin, Director IPTA Governing Division, Higher Education Department, Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia.
Br. Tuan Anuzi welcomed guests, paper presenters and participants from both Public Institutions of Higher Education and Private Institutions of Higher Education to the NASA 2013, organised by PMA, IIUM.
Prof. Dato’ Sri Dr. Zaleha mentioned in her speech that academicians and administrators have to work together in ensuring that universities maintain the progressive development of a country. She mentioned that the NASA 2013 has allowed university administrators from various parts of Malaysia to come together and share knowledge and experience with speakers who specialise in the higher learning industry and to build networks with other administrators. She hoped that the event will augment professionalism and the status of university administrators and provide participants with new ideas on continuous adaptation in the workplace.
The keynote address presented by Cik Norina was entitled, ‘Higher Education Blueprint for Malaysia: Role of Higher Education Institutions in the 21st Century’. Cik Norina underlined the importance of administrators in materializing the vision and mission of universities. She mentioned the second thrust of the National Mission of the Ninth Malaysia Plan, whereby Malaysia needs to produce workers with a first class mindset to face developmental changes in knowledge and an innovation based economy.
For her, administrators ought to manage and adapt to the concerns and challenges in the 21st Century in accordance with the Higher Education Blueprint or PSPTN.
Cik Norina spoke of how globalization has encouraged world higher education to move into a new direction. She mentioned that higher education in Malaysia should be international, vibrant and establish networks based on collaboration and complement one another rather than compete with one another.
For Cik Norina, administrators should determine how they could maximize their role in achieving the objectives of PSPTN. They should change their mindset towards a more holistic, objective and global view. Administrators are important in every thrust of the PSPTN. They should excel in their leadership roles. All administrators should be working together towards making Malaysia the Centre of Education Excellence.
There were nine speakers from the IIUM, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), AlBukhary International University, Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), UPM, Sunway College, and Malaysian Association of Learning and Development (MyLead). The forum had two panelists from Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) and Multimedia University (MMU) who discussed on the topic, ‘Survival of Private Institutions of Higher Learning – Role of Administrators’.
The NASA 2013 closed with a speech by Dato’ Haji Wan Mohd Hilmi Wan Kamal,
