Applying to university is one of the most anxiety filled challenges for students and their parents. So much work has gone into getting to this stage in the students’ lives. On top of that, everyone is interested or has a comment or idea of where to go. This is why schools have designated professionals to assist students under their care to find and apply to the most appropriate schools for each individual student.
Over the last several years, with the ever changing and diverse population of students at Harrow Beijing, the School has addressed the international nature of its student body. In order to meet the interests of students when it comes to university selection and admission, Harrow has specific staff members who can assist in navigating the confusing pathways to university.
The choices Harrow students make when it comes to university have expanded from just the UK to now include the US, Canada, Korea and other countries. To assist in all of these along with Alex Murchie, Head of Sixth Form, Harrow has added Hamilton Gregg, formerly from the International School of Beijing, to work with students interested in applying to schools in the US and Canada.
Together, Mr. Murchie and Mr. Gregg work with students in the college selection process right through to the application process. Working closely with each student, our professionals can tailor advice directly to meet each student’s goals and aspirations while keeping in mind their current academic performance.
We strongly encourage parents to speak with either Mr. Murchie or Mr. Gregg regarding the future plans for university.
The Use of Outside Agents:
For students interested in applying to schools in the US and Canada, Harrow strongly discourages the hiring of Agents. Since the school now has a staff member with long term experience in college advising for the US and Canada there is no need to seek outside assistance. Furthermore, universities in both the US and Canada are strongly against the use of Agents in the application process.
The reason for the overall discouragement is due to the overall concern of ethical representation. Agents typically offer to provide full service to clients – writing letters of recommendation, faking school documents, making promises about acceptance just to name a few of the reasons. Universities in the US and Canada currently require all official school documentation to come directly from the school. The expectation of institution to institution for items such as school reports, letters of recommendation etc… is one of verifying that the documents are in fact directly from the source.
It should be noted that families who use Agents risk their student not being accepted at all to university In addition, Harrow will not provide official school documents to agents or their counter parts. Harrow will only issue official documents (letters of recommendation, school records, etc…) directly to universities or colleges.
