UUM ONLINE: It must certainly have been an experience of a lifetime for more than 600 secretaries and their guests when they had the opportunity to meet Datuk Shake, the crooner par excellence who burst onto the Malaysian musical scene in the early ‘80s.
The secretaries and their guests met the songster at the Secretaries’ Week celebrations, organized conjointly by Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) and the UUM Association of Secretaries (SETIA), at the Equatorial Hotel, Penang, on 21 April 2012.
Datuk Shake, who was specially invited from France to start off the festivities, thoroughly enthralled all who attended the event.
To fit the theme of the celebrations, From Paris with Love, the crooner gave renditions of 15 of his hit songs such as Anugerah Dari Kegagalan, Umi, Lina, Kita Bertemu Lagi, Ku Masih Menanti, and Kau Bungaku. He also performed several French numbers such as Demons et Merveilles (Demons and Marvels), and Rien N’est Plus Beau Que L’amour (Love is a Many Splendored Thing).
The affair was compered by Muaz Mohamed, the host of the TV programme Pilih Kasih 3. The guests were also entertained by Tomok, the winner of the 2009 One in a Million singing competition, and Idayu, the winner of the Akademi Fantasia talent show in its third season.
The event, which began at 3 pm on that day, included lucky draws that lit the faces of guests who won prizes ranging from a 32” LCD television set, which was the grand prize, to notebooks, netbooks, mobile phones, various electrical appliances, and special vacation vouchers from reputable hotels.
The occasion was enlivened by the gracious presence of His Excellency the Governor of Penang, Tun Datuk Seri Utama Dr. Haji Abdul Rahman Haji Abbas, and his spouse, Toh Puan Datuk Seri Utama Hajah Majimor Shariff, the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak, and his spouse, Datin Norhayati Nazri, representatives of the District Officers of the Southwest and Northeast districts of Penang, and members of the UUM University Management Committee.
The President of SETIA, Siti Aizian Ismail, said that she was profoundly touched by the confidence placed by the University Management in the Association’s ability to organize the celebrations. She said that she hoped SETIA would acquit itself admirably in carrying out the responsibility entrusted to it.
“SETIA, as an Association of Secretaries at a public institution of higher learning, has previously been solely focused on career advancement and potential enhancement via the organization of conventions, workshops, seminars, and various welfare activities. The opportunity of organising an event such as the Secretaries’ Week, then, is an opportunity that is doubly special. It has given SETIA the certain fame of being the first Association of Secretaries from the public institutions of higher learning in Malaysia to hold such a programme while, at the same time, giving it a prominent role to play, for the first time, at the national level,” she said.
She added that SETIA was extremely fortunate in having been favoured with special sponsorships from various financial institutions, corporate bodies, and state and federal government agencies.
