English is one of the international languages which play an important role, such as to establish social communication or relationship. In the SLTP level, English teaching is aimed at providing students in getting knowledge and skills that is used to continue their study at a higher level. In foreign language, reading comprehension is very important skill to be taught because it can be used to further develop the ability to read not only textbooks but also other reading materials.
Reading as one of the most important aspects in English makes the teacher should take the special priority in teaching and learning process. According to Harris and Sipay (1980:1), children who are disable reader are increasingly handicapped, they tend to repeat grades and if they got into high school, they usually drop out before graduation. That is why reading comprehension take a big role for the students considered as the skill that must be mastered in the learning process.
This study was aimed at describing (1) the qualification of the English teachers, (2) the curriculum used to teach English reading, (3) textbook/reading materials used, (4) the techniques of teaching English reading (5) facilities the school have to support the process of teaching and learning English reading, (6) problems the teacher faced in learning teaching process of English reading.
The subjects of this study were English teacher and the second year students of SMPN 11 Malang. The research design of this study is descriptive qualitative method. It was descriptive qualitative research since this study concerned with the description of students’ achievements in reading comprehension. The instruments were observation, interview, questionnaire, and documentation. Therefore, the researcher collected the data to investigate the process of teaching learning reding comprehension.
The technique used by the English teacher at SMPN 11 Malang are the technique of teaching reading through three phases, pre-reading, whilst-reading activity and the post-reading activity. The English teacher here still used the textbook of reading material, besides the students work book (LKS) as the additional assignment for the students.
While the media used by the English teacher is the whiteboard, students work papers and picture in the reading text. The teacher said it is enough to be applied in reading and easy to follow by the students. The teacher applied formative and summative test as the evaluation. The formative test is held when one chapter has been finished and also applied summative test i.e. held every once in one semester.
Based on the result of final test, most of the students got score nothing less than 70. It can be concluded that the average of the students achievement is upper than the minimum learning standard mastery (SKBM) which is just 65.
The researcher suggests the teacher should select the more creative reading material than just relying on one source of reading material in order to introduce the students to various passages as well as broadening the students’ knowledge. Beside, the used of variation techniques would avoid monotone and students boredom. Teacher might be needed to change the information or experiences with other teacher and more follow training because the teacher as mediator must give the best for the students.
