English is one of the important languages used as a means of communication in the world, and it has become an international language. It also considered as the first foreign language to be taught in Indonesia from elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school, or even in college. When we learn English, we have to learn the language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing. This research concerned on the correlation between English achievement and Mathematics achievement of the first year students at internationally standardized class at RSBI SMPN 1 Kraksaan.
This study was conducted in a correlation design. In this study, there are two variables investigated, namely: independent variable (students’ English achievement) and dependent variable (students’ mathematics achievement). The researcher focused on the score or achievement of these two variables. The sample in this study was 52 students who were selected randomly from 130 student of the first year at RSBI SMPN 1 Kraksaan. Meanwhile the data is a document of LHBS (Laporan Hasil Belajar Siswa) to know the English and Mathematics achievement. The collected data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment correlation formula.
The result in this study indicates that there is a positive correlation between English achievement and Mathematics achievement of the first year students at internationally standardized class at SMPN 1 Kraksaan. Significance means the correlation coefficient 0,327 is higher than critical value where (df = n-2) at 0,05 level of significant 0,2732. However, the correlation between English achievement and Mathematics achievement is low (weak) since the result is only 0,327.
Finally, the researcher suggested that the students should master the English subject before they come to another subject, it is related to the rule that the communication tool in this kind of school is English. Besides that, this program is a good program since the finding of this research is positive correlation, the researcher also suggests to DIKNAS to increase the quality of the teacher, since the teacher is the most important aspect that affect the quality of students.
